Those of us who attended the speekup sessions and wondered what would become of the input can be assured that many of the ideas and proposals have been considered and refined and carried on to the final prosess. It has not been an easy task, however. There are 41 proposals that are being considered which present a challenge to all delegates. We must pare them down and perhaps combine some so that they represent a workable presentation to the Archbishop. This will be our task at the second session in June.
Sitting at the table with other Catholics including Priests, Religious and lay people I have been awed by there willingness to work together. There are people who range in age from young adults, to middle age, to the elderly. There are people of different economic levels and ethnic backgrounds. The common denominator is that we are all Catholic and willing to lend our minds and energies to this important task.
The many proposals present us with the need to listen, learn and allow ourselves to be affected by views other than our own. I believe the result will be a better and stronger church for all of us.
I mentioned to the others in the car as we drove home after the session that this is a most significant event in the history of our church. It is the first time that so many lay people have been part of the planning for the diocese. Only time and much work will determine the affect of the Synod but the mere fact that it is happening is a powerfull sign of the church at work in the lives of people.
I am priveledged to be a part of it and pray for its success.
