Reflections on 1st session of Diocesan Synod by Gretchen Lovingood

I was a participant in the regional Synod (S.B.) and so I was able to appreciate all the work that went into developing the proposals we worked on at the Diocesan Synod. However, since there was input from all 5 regions, at times (as a matter of fact most of the time) I felt frustrated at the large number of proposals we were expected to work on. A couple of times I thought: this is ammunition for a SUPER HEADACHE. Many of the proposals seem repetitive but I've convinced myself this will have to be worked out as the proposals get prioritized and turn into action items (the work of Session two of the Synod coming up in 3 weeks).

At my table, there were 3 lay women, 3 lay men, 2 religious women and 2 priests. That in itself is amazing, since the last Synod 40 years ago consisted of only priests. It was a privilege to be there in the presence of laity and religious who have made it clear that this church belongs to all of us. If at one time most of the laity thought the church really belonged to the priests and bishops and we were just the obedient flock, those days are over.

I especially enjoyed listening to the voices of the youngest delegates (18 - 30) who have no problem standing at a microphone before the group and giving their input.

One thing I am positive of, if the proposals of the Synod become a reality in our Church, it's going to take all of us working together. I hope each of you will find some way to get involved in the implementation of the proposals when that becomes a reality in your parish.
