2008
October 6, 2008 - We discussed the first half of the popular book by theologian Hans Küng "Why I am Still a Christian" (1987). Küng continues to find his spiritual home in Christianity because in it he finds the answer to the questions of “the great Whence and Whither, Why and Wherefore, of humanity.” It is Jesus who gives God a human face. March 10, 2008 - We viewed and discussed portions of the video series "The Faithful Revolution: Vatican II." One segment, entitled "Genius of the Heart," showed original footage of John XXIII and his planning of the Council as well as of the opening ceremony in 1962. The second segment, "A World Transformed," focused on how the decrees of the Council affected the laity. February 25, 2008 - We viewed and discussed the video "Jesus: Portrait of a Radical." The focus of the video was on the ways that Jesus undercut expectations about religion. His basic but surprising message was “do not be afraid,” “ trust yourselves,” and “you are beloved.” 2007
June 12, 2007 - The topic of the meeting was threefold: First, to practice credible social stewardship by making a grant from our excess funds (members' donations) to a worthy cause, in this case the Therapy Trust for Victims of Clergy Sex Abuse. Next we discussed the reorganization and simplification of VOTF Santa Barbara in light of the difficulty of finding replacements for the outgoing leadership team. We will be run by a steering committee and meet on an as-needed basis during 2007-08. Finally we discussed how to handle the Archdiocesan ban on Bishop Tom Gumbleton's public speaking. May 8, 2007 - The topic of the meeting was church finances and accountability. The guest speaker (via a CD recording made at the 2007 L.A. Religious Education Congress) was Fr. Donald Cozzens. Read more at the May 8, 2007 link. March 13, 2007 - Guest speaker was Sr. Carol Quinlivan, Director of the Office of Parish Life for the Archdiocese of Los Angeles. This office recruits, trains, and facilitates Parish Life Directors (PLDs), who are in charge of "priestless" parishes. The office also handles Parish Associates, Business Managers, and Pastoral Councils. Sr Carol gave a fascinating and enlightening presentation to VOTF members on the topic of "Finding Our Voice: Emerging Models of Lay Leadership." 2006
November 14, 2006 - Guest speaker was Fr. Jack Clark Robinson, OFM, a former pastor and spiritual director, as well as an author and presently a doctoral student and instructor at UCSB. His dissertation is on the history of the Franciscan Friars in the USA. Fr. Jack's talk was entitled "Franciscans: Rousing the Rabble for God." October 10, 2006 - Click this link to see the informative handout provided by our guest speaker, Dr. Ann Taves, on the subject of "Papal Authority and the 'Voice of the Faithful.'" September 12, 2006 - Guest speaker was Sr. Sheila McNiff, the Victims Assistance Minister (VAM) for the Los Angeles Archdiocese May 1, 2006 - "Conversation with our Clergy." April 3, 2006 - Guest speaker was Angelica Jochim, formerly ombudsman for the Independent Response Team (IRT) and now Pastoral Outreach Coordinator for the Franciscan Province of Saint Barbara. March 6, 2006 - Guest speaker was Lisa Gosdschan, a member of the Regional Pastoral Council. She reported on the progress being made by the Regional Pastoral Council. February 6, 2006 - Guest speaker was Paul Fericano, founder of SafeNet, a program to support survivors of sexual abuse by Franciscans and to help the Franciscan order deal with survivors and perpetrators. 2005
